Black tea is not a style you often find from Taiwan, known mostly for high quality oolongs. Liking the fuller flavours of black teas this tea caught our curiosity.
The Hong Yun #21 cultivar is a relatively young tea, released in 2008 and given the official notation #21 by Taiwan's Tea Research and Extension Station (TRES). It's been developed for the terroir of specific growing regions exclusively within Taiwan to produce high-quality teas.
This batch grown and produced in the central mountainous region of Nantou, in the township of Yuchi surrounding the Sun Moon Lake, an area noted for quality production.
The Hong Yun cultivar is noted for its citrusy qualities and Yuchi Hong Yun #21 is no exception revealing complex citrus flavours akin to the blood orange, a touch sweet orange, infused with tangy grapefruit with hints of tart cherries and raspberries and light pepper spice. A smooth medium body, the flavours lingering long after your last sip.
